During the initial assessment the veterinary physiotherapist will assess your animal and devise a treatment plan which is specific to the individual needs of the animal. Short- and long-term aims will be made so that your animals’ progression can be tracked by the owner, physiotherapist and vet. Frequent reports will be sent to the vet to inform them of how the treatment is progressing, how the animal is responding and if there are any concerns.

Physiotherapy can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions including:

  1. Musculoskeletal issues including soft tissue injuries like sprains and strains or ruptures to ligaments, tendons and muscles as well as joint problems like OCD.

  2. Orthopaedic issues.

  3. Neurological problems where there might be short- or long-term damage

  4. Sports medicine/performance where physiotherapists can provide conditioning programmes for certain sports or for animals beginning their training.

  5. Elderly care with the aim of keeping the animal comfortable and mobile.

  6. Developmental issues like hip and elbow dysplasia.

Manual Therapies

Manual therapies are incorporated into every treatment plan.

Massage increases blood flow and relaxes muscle tissues, reducing spasm and painful contractions.

Stretches may also be prescribed as part of your animals rehabilitation or treatment plan. Stretching enhances a tissues elasticity leading to an increased range of motion and increased flexibility. Stretches can be demonstrated to the owner and done at home as part of a home exercise regime.

Electrotherapies

The Harrogate Vet Physio has a range of different electrotherapy modalities which will be used alongside manual therapies and exercise regimes to ensure your pet is receiving the best possible care.

  • LASER - uses photobiostimulation to cause biological changes in cells. It can be used to stimulate healing in a variety of tissues within the body including bone, muscle and skin. It can also provide pain relief and is particularly useful in the early stages of healing.

  • PEMFT - uses magnetic fields to treat a variety of conditions like osteoarthritis, pain, wound healing and bone healing.
