What is Vet Physio?

Veterinary physiotherapy is the use of noninvasive techniques like massage and stretching to rehabilitate animals after injury. It involves examining and evaluating patients with functional limitations and health conditions to determine a diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan.

Physiotherapy provides an accelerated rate of recovery for an animal and is also used to guide the recovery process so that there is a decreased chance of secondary complications. The techniques and exercises prescribed by a veterinary physiotherapist increase circulation whilst decreasing pain, inflammation and oedema to allow optimal healing. Other benefits include:

  • Restoring and promoting normal movement patterns

  • Maintaining muscle strength

  • Maintaining flexibility and joint range of motion

Physiotherapists do not only treat injured animals but are also involved in helping to prevent injury by maintaining fitness, health and quality of life.

In accordance with The Veterinary Surgeons Act (1966), veterinary physiotherapists can only treat an animal once it has been referred by a veterinary surgeon. We therefore, need a signed consent form before treating your animal. Click here to download the veterinary referral form.

About us

The Harrogate Vet Physio is owned and run by Sophie Brook, who graduated from Harper Adams University with a BSc(Hons) in Veterinary Physiotherapy.

The Harrogate Vet Physio is a flexible, mobile service which is fully insured as well as being registered with appropriate governing bodies (IRVAP, NARCH).

Sophie first began working in animal rehabilitation in 2014 when she started taking her chocolate labrador Truffle for hydrotherapy and managed to get herself a Saturday job helping at the centre. This ultimately lead to her undertaking her degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy at Harper Adams University. As part of her degree, Sophie undertook a placement year which involved working with dogs at Clent Hills Fitness and Rehabilitation Centre in Bromsgrove and then spending six months working under world class equine vets in Munich, Germany.

I cannot thank Sophie enough. The change in Lottie, who almost couldn't walk at Christmas, is amazing, she's like a crazy puppy again!

Archie takes a long time to trust people but he loved Sophie right from the start, he runs in and greets her with a wagging tail and gives her a big kiss
